When you are down on yourself, your language may not have an room for hope in it.
Words like “yet” or “More” or “perhaps”, “could”, “maybe” that are added in sentences to lessen the impact in statements and allow for possibility and positivity.
For example, a Debbie Downer may say “I am not rich”. Someone who is empowered and positive, would use a Language Softener, choosing to say: “I am not rich YET…”

Why Is it So Important?
The words you use, creates your world.
Using disempowering language, keeps you stuck and unhappy and limits your choices – even when opportunities are present. So language softeners really make you more resourceful.
Indicators that you may need to use Language Softeners
When you feel:
- You did something wrong.
- There is no possibility.
Things you may say that indicate a need for language softeners:
- I’ll never find someone I love! [do you see you are claiming there is no possibility?]
- I can’t believe I did that again! [beating yourself up]
- It won’t ever be like that for me [claiming no possibility again]
How to Use Language Softeners
- Start to become more aware when you are beating yourself up.
- If you say things like “I’m not rich” correct yourself — and add “I’m not rich YET“.
- Start hearing others using limiting language and correct them.
