A paradigm is a model, theory, or explanation of something. Paradigm are like maps. If we have the wrong map (or paradigm) is causes problems – we never reach our destination.
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
In Stephen Covey’s book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (one of my favorites!), he explains that how you SEE the world depends on the lens (the paradigm) from which you are operating.
If you change the lens (called a paradigm-shift), you change how people SEE their world. This results in changes in behavior and attitude!
Covey argues that working on behavior and attitude doesn’t work — since those are not paradigms.
Example of Paradigms
An example I can share. I went to a seminar recently where he talked about the word “selling.” Most people have a bad taste in their mouth when they hear the word “selling.”
But at this seminar, the speaker share a new definition. He defined selling as serving. Selling is serving.
His idea was that the more people you can help, the more value you offer. The more value you offer, the more money you make. Selling is serving.
That simple definition created a paradigm shift in me. It changed my map on the world of selling.
